ALL flowers and herbs listed above are CROSS POLLINATED. If you wish to ensure “True to Type” varieties for seed saving grow only one variety or use isolation techniques. In most cases, any flower which is cross pollinated (either by wind or insects) will cross with other members within the same species.

Example: Genovese Basil

Ocimum = Genus

basilicum = species

‘Genovese’ = Variety

Genovese Basil = Common name

To ensure you get Genovese Basil when saving seed DO NOT plant a different variety, such as Heirloom Leaf Lettuce Basil, with the Genovese Basil because BOTH have the same species, basilicum and WILL cross with each other.

    1. Hi Joni,

      Many factor influence how long seed remains viable. If they are kept dry and cool many will last for years. For annual vegetables onions, corn, and beans have notoriously been described as being shorter lived than others. Yet our experience at CSLL and personally has been that even those seed will germinate and thrive well after their “allotted” life span.
